Security increased at movies following shootings

New York police posted officers at dozens of theaters around the city. Ticket-takers at a multiplex in Washington searched moviegoers' bags and purses. And one of the nation's biggest theater chains barred patrons from wearing masks or costumes.

Security was stepped up in places around the U.S. during showings of the new Batman movie Friday after the massacre in Colorado. And while some people said they were afraid to go to the movies in the wake of the shooting rampage, many others were undeterred by the tragedy and eager to see "The Dark Knight Rises."

Jimmy Baker, 40, waited outside the AMC theater in New York's Time Square for almost three hours to see an early matinee, as a police cruiser sat nearby. "I just felt bad for the people that had to be traumatized by this entire event," he said. But "I didn't feel like it had any kind of effect on me. ... I'm just here to enjoy a good movie."

Stephanie Suriel, 21, waiting outside the same theater, said her mother was slightly concerned about her going to see the film. But "I'm not nervous at all because I really want to see that movie."

Still, just to be safe, she said, "I'm going to sit in the back."

Theaters took the precautions after a gunman wearing a gas mask opened fire at a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colo., killing at least 12 people.

In Washington, the Homeland Security Department held a conference call with officials from the commercial, entertainment and shopping mall industries to discuss what security measures they could take to prevent something like this from happening again.

The National Association of Theater Owners said it was working closely with law enforcement authorities and reviewing security procedures, but gave no details of any precautions taken.

AMC Theatres, the nation's second-largest theater chain, with more than 300 movie houses, said it will not allow people to wear costumes or face-covering masks into its theaters.

Fans of sci-fi and superhero movies often dress up as their favorite characters, especially on opening night. New York City's police commissioner said the gunman in the Colorado rampage painted his hair red and called himself the Joker, Batman's nemesis. But Aurora police would not confirm that.

The New York Police Department said was posting officers at about 40 theaters around the city that were showing the film. The increased security was a precaution against potential copycat shooters, and also meant to reassure moviegoers.

"We're doing this to raise the comfort level," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. "We'd certainly encourage everybody to go about their business."

At the Regal Gallery Place multiplex in downtown Washington, moviegoers trickled into an 11 a.m. showing. Theater employees searched patrons' bags and purses while taking their tickets.

"I'm believing that it's not related so much to the movie," Steve Glaude, a 57-year-old federal employee, said of the shooting. "The movie may have been a trigger. It may not have been. We don't know. I don't think it was hero or villain emulation."

Christine Cooley, who works near Tampa, Fla., for the University of Florida, said her 15-year-old daughter has sworn off going to the movies because of the tragedy.

"It's tainted the movie completely for her," Cooley said. "It's summertime. That's a big movie time for teenagers. That movie is off the list now. Movie theaters in general are off her summer to-do list because of that."

Cooley said she tried to explain that the shooting was random and not an indication of security at theaters in general, "but I can see where she's coming from. Why put yourself in harm's way?"

At the United Artists Riverview Stadium 17 in Philadelphia, a steady stream of people headed in for morning showings of "The Dark Knight Rises." Staff members said that there was extra security, but that that was normal for big movies and unrelated to the Colorado shooting.

Neal Mates, 38, a professed "film geek," said: "Shootings can happen anywhere. ... I think it's silly to blame the film."

What will we do when all the oil is gone? | Peak Oil News and ...

title=

If the oil runs out, will you be ready? Rin Simpson investigates the issues surrounding peak oil, sustainable development and why we need to do things differently in order to have any hope of a comfortable future

One day, the oil will run out. It?s only logical. It?s a finite resource, so unless we can figure out a way to make more, we?ll use it up eventually.

And probably soon. According to the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC), conventional oil production is likely to peak within the next 20 years, and could possibly do so within the next decade.

It?s a difficult future to imagine. We?re just so used to being able to switch on the lights, drive to work, have our grocery shopping delivered.

For as long as most of us can remember our economy has run on oil which, up until now, has been relatively easy to access. But all that is due to change.

?Unfortunately, we have pretty much used up all the easy stuff,? said Dr Calvin Jones, from the Welsh Economy Research Unit at Cardiff Business School.

?The oil ? and to a lesser extent the gas and carbon ? that is left is harder to get at, and that means we can only get a certain amount out of the ground each year without increasing costs.?

The problem is that it takes energy to harvest energy. While traditional sources of oil have been relatively easily accessible, we are increasingly left with less cost effective alternatives such as tar sands and shales, which are much more energy intensive to turn into usable fuel.

With fewer conventional supplies, energy return on energy invested is only going to get lower, making oil more and more expensive to produce and, in turn, for the end user to buy.

Renewable energy such as solar, wind and tidal power are all possible alternatives but, according to Dr Jones, investment in these technologies isn?t happening nearly as fast as it needs to, not least because there are tough choices involved in producing energy on our own doorstep rather than abroad. It?s much easier to ignore poor working conditions in the Asian gas fields than the wind turbines you can see from your bedroom window.

?The good and the bad thing about renewable energy is that it?s made on our doorstep,? said Dr Jones.

?Energy is not a costless thing. You can choose not to have any wind farms in Wales, as long as you?re happy with a nuclear power station. That?s your choice.

?I?m an economist at heart, I make no distinction between different energy sources.?

Dr Jones believes that the key to a sustainable future is preparation and resilience and, although there is clearly a vital part for the government to play, he acknowledges that individuals can?t simply wait to be rescued.

?I always think to myself, ?what would I do if tomorrow the lights didn?t come on and I turned the cooker on and it didn?t light because there was no gas?? In what ways would you be able to function? Could you get to work? Could you get to the supermarket?

?If you can?t get to work by driving your car, is there a bus, could you walk? Do you have a local shop? If you do, perhaps you should use it because you might really need it in the future.

?If we ask ourselves how we would be affected then we can see how vulnerable we are to peak oil. The time has gone when we can rely on a white knight to come and sort this out for us.?

Ben Bragwynt agrees. The co-founder of Transition, an organisation dedicated to preparing the world for the inevitability of a future where energy is scarce, likens society?s various approaches to the fuel crisis to the five stages of grief ? and compares people who are hoping for an 11th-hour rescue to those in the initial denial stage.

?Most people?s views of the future fall into one of four categories,? he explained. ?There?s the techno-fantasist, the collapsist (sort of a Mad Max scenario), the green growth myth which is ?business as usual but run off solar power?, and the conscious energy descent approach, where we take ecological and energy levels and design for them.

?That pretty much matches people?s psychological dispositions; it?s the different stages of grief. There?s denial (the techno-fantasist), negotiation (green growth), anger and grief (collapsist) and then acceptance (conscious energy descent).?

It is the last of these models that Transition was born out of: the oil is going to run out, so let?s get ready for it and drive the changes proactively rather than reactively.

A big part of that process, says Bragwynt, is helping people understand the realities of the situation, so that they can quickly arrive at the ?acceptance? stage and start making good choices for the future.

?Our view is that it?s impossible to create a future that you can?t envisage,? he said.

?So that?s one of our goals, to try to help people think about what would my town look like if we had managed to transition from high fuel dependency down to dramatically less fossil fuels and dramatically less carbon emissions.?

While change needs to happen at a variety of levels ? from individual through regional and national to international ? Transition works very much at the community level, which is where they see the greatest potential for immediate and effective change.

As such, there are local groups all over the country and indeed the world, each doing what they can to protect the future of society.

In Cardiff, a team of around eight core ?stakeholders?, as they call themselves, has been working on a number of projects, including a ?green map? which will help local people access all sorts of sustainable services, products and projects nearby.

?We?re using a computer mapping system called Green Maps which is based on Google Maps,? explained Lewis Mottram, who has been with the group for 18 months. ?It?s a public website, so people can go on and see what?s about.

?There?s a huge range of things going on in Cardiff ? there?s Cardiff Transition projects, there?s things like the cycling groups, community gardens, allotments, ?friends of garden? spaces, particular parties like the Green Party and lobbying movements like Friends of the Earth.

?Basically we?re trying to cover all green and sustainable activity in Cardiff.?

Though in a global context their work is by no means large in scale, the group, made up of a range of professions from retirees and artists to academics and local government workers, believe that every small action counts.

?I guess the aim is consciousness raising, making people aware of the problem and aware of the possible solutions,? said Mottram. ?Yes, we?re individuals but when a lot of people move in the same direction it has a big effect.

?So really, it?s about getting people to move towards being more green in their everyday lives, providing them with best practice and things to do.

?People need to wake up to the need for change,? he added.

?My own feeling is that governments and businesses seem fairly blind to what might happen and I suppose just in case they continue to be blind and bad things do happen, we can be a bit more prepared by taking up some of the activities we?re doing.

?Having the knowledge to grow your own food might be useful in the future where food might be hard to come by because there?s not enough fuel to move the food around.

?I?m not sure that the oil is going to run out, but there?s enough worry among scientists that we should be ready for the change, and change in advance of the change being necessary so that the whole thing goes more smoothly.?

If changing public perception and increasing awareness of the issues is key to modifying behaviours, then education must necessarily be an important part of the solution.

Jane Davidson is director of the Institute for Sustainable Practice, Innovation and Resource Efficiency (INSPIRE) at University of Wales Trinity St David, and former Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing in the last Welsh Government.

She says the Welsh Government has a history of prioritising sustainability going back to the Assembly constitution and the first Government of Wales Act, with further commitment in the form of moves like the Sustainable Development Bill, which is currently under consultation.

?ESDGC ? which is Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship ? was integrated into the Welsh curriculum and it is still in the Welsh curriculum,? she said.

?The reason it?s there is the politicians and the teachers thought it was very important that children are educated for the future.

?This is about ensuring that the curriculum in all disciplines contributes to a greater understanding of how to live more sustainably,? she added.

?We can play an incredibly important role in educating the citizens of the future.

?Those areas where we?re living completely unsustainably, we will have to change because these resources will become more unreliable.

?But it?s better to be the agents of change ourselves, and manage it. And that?s what living more sustainably is about.?

Though the issues surrounding peak oil, sustainable development and the need for change remain hotly debated, it is clear that we need to do something.

From the governments that decide how our society is organised, to the individuals who can make a difference in their daily lives, we all need to change the way we think and get ready for the very strong possibility of a future where oil doesn?t come on tap.

?I don?t want my legacy to my children to be, ?thank you very much, we?ve used it all up?,? said Davidson.

?I want my legacy to be, ?we did the best we could in terms of ensuring that we changed the mindset?.

?And that?s what education for sustainable development is about. It?s changing the mindset.?
