Vitor Belfort has strong feelings on shaving

Vitor Belfort missed out on the chance to fight in front of a home crowd over the weekend, as he had to pull out from his bout with Wanderlei Silva because of an injury. However, he is not going to miss on the chance to tell fellow Brazilians how to shave.

In other Belfort news, the UFC is still hoping for a fight between Belfort and Silva and they are aiming for an October show in Brazil. However, Belfort doesn't think that fight makes sense, and would rather fight Michael Bisping and then get another shot at the UFC middleweight belt. He's also open to moving to light heavyweight, and he isn't afraid of Jon Jones.

Consider this your daily Vitor Belfort briefing. You are now briefed.

BMW i Born Electric Tour Makes First Stop in Rome

Published June 23, 2012

By Philippe Crowe

BMW_i_Rome

Yesterday the BMW Group announced it had inaugurated its international BMW i Born Electric Tour to promote its pending electric vehicles, with the first stop being at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni located at Via Nazionale 194 in Rome.

The event in Rome is scheduled to cover four days from June 20 to 24, then the tour will visit six other cities over the next 12 months: Dusseldorf, Tokyo, New York, London, Paris, and Shanghai.

The BMW i brand was introduced last year and is now in the process of preparing for the launch of vehicles characterized by very low environmental impact and designed for sustainable individual mobility.

Two prototypes to be showcased that you are likely already aware of are the BMW i3 Concept and the BMW i8 Concept.

With its zero-emissions all-electric powertrain and a range of about 93 miles, the BMW i3 Concept was designed expressly for city use, although BMW says it does stay true to its heritage of a dynamic driving experience.

The extended-range i8 offers up to 22 miles electric-only driving, and utilizes a 215-horsepower, 1.5 liter gas engine plus 128-horsepower electric motor to speed to as high as 155 mph, and it sprints from 0-62 mph in around 4.8 seconds.

The BMW i Born Electric Tour is intended to demonstrate the BMW Group?s ?holistic approach to future mobility, not only in terms of products displayed, but also in terms of networking information, technologies, and transportation systems.? BMW says. ?The initiative also benefits from collaboration with the Italian architect and designer, Fabio Novembre. Through collaboration with the Officina Design and Driade, he will create his interpretation of the city and be the first of seven major world-class artists engaged to offer their visions of the urban context.?

BMW will also demonstrate its range of mobility services aimed at optimizing use of parking spaces and the utilization of navigation systems that can access local information, as well as intermodal road maps, and car-sharing schemes such as DriveNow.

BMW i recently acquired an interest in MyCityWay and ParkatmyHouse Web portals. ParkatmyHouse makes it possible for private persons to rent their personal parking space when it is not in use, via the Internet or a specific smartphone application.

50-gigapixel camera is straight out of science fiction

10 hrs.

While photographers marvel at the 20 or 30 megapixels captured by the latest cameras, researchers at Duke laugh quietly and return to their lab to continue work on a system that could capture 50 gigapixels at the touch of a button.

For comparison, if your average point-and-shoot picture was the size of a word on this page, a 50-gigapixel shot would be around the size of your entire screen.

Gigapixels aren't new in and of themselves, of course: Enormous photos of the Milky Way or Obama's?inauguration are both effective demonstrations of the power of huge images. But generally these giant pictures are created by one camera that takes hundreds (or thousands) of shots, which are then?fitted together after the fact. Not a problem if you're taking pictures of stars, but no good?if you wanted to capture a flock of birds taking off.

The team at Duke, led by David Brady at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering, decided to take things a different direction: instead of taking lots of pictures in sequence with one camera, why not take lots of pictures at once with a bunch of cameras?

The result is the AWARE-2 camera system, a machine that looks like something out of science fiction. It bristles with wires and ports, and houses?a lens array that could be the eye of an enormous robotic insect.

The system actually shares many characteristics with insects' compound eyes: A single image enters through a central lens, but is then refracted outward in 98 different directions to 98 different image sensors, each of which receives a different piece of the picture. The pieces are then assembled by a central processor.

Images produced by the system are enormous. 50 gigapixels is the maximum theoretical size, but even a fraction of that?that is far larger than any picture most people have ever taken. Look at the shot below; on this enormous landscape, the tiny white dots on the sky are in fact birds, captured in enough detail that you can zoom in and check out the details of their wings. (here's a larger version)

That's with a prototype device using only half the microcameras and the first generation of lenses designed for the system.?Brady explains that right now, the size and quality of images is limited by the quality of the main objective lens, but they have already built a superior lens for 10-gigapixel images.

50 gigapixels is the upper limit because it is the precision?limit of lens-manufacturing technology, and also because beyond that you start running into the resolution limit of the atmosphere, i.e. what can be discerned through all those pesky air molecules between the camera and the subject. So it's no surprise that they're considering imaging at that size for astronomical rather than terrestrial photography.

The applications of enormous images captured more or less instantly are easy to imagine, both in everyday life, academic research, and for the military, which is funding the project through DARPA.

The paper describing AWARE-2 was published in the journal Nature, and the authors have put together a separate?site with more information and lots of?pictures for the curious.

What are Today's Best New Retail Developments? | Hard Hat Chat

A proper pre-construction analysis can help developers avoid the "build it and they will come" approach, which can end disastrously as this property in Crest Hill illustrates.

I get asked a lot about commercial construction trends. With the way the commercial real estate market has been the last several years, people are looking to commercial construction experts for the best construction tips on how to proceed with a successful new retail development. Recently someone asked me: ?What is the best retail center to build today??

If only there was one answer to that question. In today?s market, this has to be approached on a case-by-case basis. A new retail development that may work for one market might not transfer to another.

It doesn?t matter what kind of new shopping center construction you desire?whether it is a Power Center, a Lifestyle Center, or a strip mall in a high-traffic infill location?nothing will be built unless the numbers make sense for the commercial construction budget.

This is different than the heyday approach of ?build it and they will come.? It?s no longer possible to assume what retail tenants and consumers might like and to undertake a new retail speculative development. Too many retail developers got caught without a chair when the music stopped in that scenario.

Today, it takes careful planning, cooperative partnerships, and the right market data to bring a new retail construction project to fruition. That is why a general contractor?s pre-construction services have become more important than ever.

The best national commercial construction firms can provide developers with the proper cost analysis of a potential development, based on area historical data. At Englewood, we have data points that go back for decades on commercial construction costs and leasing rates for areas across the country. Each municipality brings its own costs, and different market cycles bring different lease rates. A developer should always know the history of a construction site before they decide to do business there.

Construction budgets can make or break a deal. Recently, we were performing a pre-construction analysis for a retail client on a Chicago-area property. Our data report helped the developer determine the lease rate that could be achieved on a retrofitted commercial space. Armed with our data, the client was able to secure Buy Buy Baby as a tenant and the deal worked out financially.

Of course, sometimes pre-construction services can work against you. Even in situations where the stars seemed to be aligning?a property is available, a tenant is secure, and financing is achievable?the numbers can quell the deal.

We used to represent Advanced Auto Parts and a commercial developer asked us to quote new retail construction for the auto franchise at a shopping center development. Advanced Auto Parts was excited about the location and the developer wanted the tenant. Unfortunately, when we delivered the cost analysis, the developer said that he couldn?t make the deal work.

Don?t get me wrong, we always want to see the deal get done, but we would never compromise the numbers or skimp on quality just to get the job. That would be doing a disservice to our clients and our good name. Being honest with clients when estimating construction costs doesn?t tarnish a relationship, it strengthens it. There could always be projects down the line that make better sense for all parties.

So keep in mind, the best general contractors may not always give you the numbers you want to hear, but they are the numbers you need to hear to make sure you are building the best retail development in the best location.

(AP) ? As jurors deliberated for more than eight hours on charges Jerry Sandusky sexually abused 10 boys over a 15-year period, new accusations of abuse were leveled against the former Penn State assistant coach by a pair of new accusers, including his adopted son.

Just a few hours into deliberations, Matt Sandusky ? one of Sandusky's six adopted children ? came forward for the first time to say in a statement that his father had abused him. The statement didn't detail the alleged abuse.

Meanwhile, Travis Weaver, a man with a civil lawsuit pending against Jerry Sandusky, told NBC's "Rock Center with Brian Williams" that Sandusky abused him more than 100 times over four years starting in 1992, when he was 10.

Weaver, 30, was named as John Doe in the lawsuit filed in Philadelphia in November.

Sequestered during deliberations, the jury was under orders from Judge John Cleland to ponder only the case placed in their hands Thursday afternoon after hearing starkly different portrayals of the case's facts during closing remarks. Deliberations were scheduled to resume Friday morning at 9 a.m.

Prosecutors have called the 68-year-old Sandusky "a serial, predatory pedophile" whose charity for at-risk youth, The Second Mile, was his source of likely victims who would be dazzled by gifts, grateful for his attention and ? perhaps most importantly ? unlikely to speak up. His arrest in November ignited a scandal at Penn State that led to the dismissals of beloved Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno and the university's president.

"He molested and abused and hurt these children horribly," Senior Deputy Attorney General Joseph McGettigan III told the jury in closing statements Thursday. "He knows he did it and you know he did it.

"Find him guilty of everything."

The defense portrays Sandusky as the hapless victim of a conspiracy to convict him of heinous crimes. They explain the 48 charges against him as the result of an investigatory team out for blood and accusers who willingly played along in hopes of securing a big pay day.

"They went after him, and I submit to you they were going to get him hell or high water, even if they had to coach witnesses," defense attorney Joe Amendola said in his animated and impassioned closing remarks.

The elder Sandusky, who faces life in prison if convicted of the allegations, was smiling and chuckling to himself as prosecutors wrapped up closing remarks. His wife, Dottie, leaned forward in her seat with a concerned look, resting her chin in her hands.

Some of the eight alleged victims who testified described showering with the longtime assistant; others spoke of lengthy relationships featuring lavish gifts and out-of-state trips. One testified he felt at times like Sandusky's son, at others his "girlfriend."

A second alleged victim ? a foster child at the time police say he was abused ? said Sandusky threatened he would never see his biological family again if he told anyone he was forced to perform sex acts, but later took it back and claimed to love him.

One accuser testified to receiving what he called "creepy love letters" from Sandusky. "I know that I have made my share of mistakes," read one handwritten note. "However, I hope that I will be able to say that I cared. There has been love in my heart."

The defense argued the longwinded letters were only the manifestation of a personality disorder characterized by excessive emotionality and attention seeking.

Two of the alleged victims have never been identified by prosecutors. The charges related to them come through other witnesses, including Mike McQueary, the former assistant coach who said he saw Sandusky having anal sex with a boy in a football facility shower. It was McQueary's testimony that touched off the massive scandal that rocked Penn State and forced a re-examination of the role of college administrators in reporting alleged abuse.

After more than eight hours of deliberations Thursday night, the jury returned briefly to the courtroom to ask Cleland if they could rehear testimony from McQueary, and Dr. Jonathan Dranov, a friend of the McQueary family who testified that McQueary gave him a different account of what he saw.

Cleland told the jurors that McQueary's testimony was about two hours in length and Dranov's was about 20 minutes long, and suggested they revisit the McQueary testimony Friday.

Sandusky has denied the allegations, but did not testify in his own defense. Jurors are aware, however, of the denials he gave NBC's "Rock Center" just after his arrest. In it, Sandusky seemed to stumble at times and struggled to give direct answers to questions about his conduct.

Asked if he was sexually attracted to boys, Sandusky told NBC's Bob Costas: "Sexually attracted, you know, I, I enjoy young people. I, I love to be around them. ... No, I'm not sexually attracted to young boys."

McGettigan seized on that, and said: "I would think that the automatic response, if someone asks you if you're a criminal, a pedophile, a child molester, or anything along those lines, would be: 'You're crazy. No. Are you nuts?'"

Prosecutors said Sandusky used gifts and the allure of Penn State's vaunted football program to attract and abuse vulnerable boys who came from troubled homes, often ones without a father figure in the house.

As during his opening statements, McGettigan during his closing put up smiling pictures of eight accusers when they were children; all testified at trial that Sandusky molested them. Standing behind Sandusky, McGettigan implored the jury for a conviction.

"What you should do is come out and say to the defendant that he molested and abused and give them back their souls," McGettigan told jurors. "I give them to you. Acknowledge and give them justice."

Amendola argued that Sandusky was targeted by investigators who coached accusers into making false claims about a generous man whose charity gave them much-needed love.

"So out of the blue (after) all these years, when Jerry Sandusky is in his mid-50s, he decides to become a pedophile? Does that make sense to anybody?" Amendola asked rhetorically.

Closing statements came after seven days of testimony, some of it explicitly describing alleged abuse suffered at the hands of Sandusky, including touching in showers, fondling and in some cases forced oral or anal sex. One alleged victim ? a foster child at the time ? testified that Sandusky threatened him, telling him he would never see his family again if he disclosed the assaults.

The jury, which includes nine people with ties to Penn State, had begun deliberating when Matt Sandusky's attorneys issued a statement alleging that Sandusky abused one of his six adopted children.

"During the trial, Matt Sandusky contacted us and requested our advice and assistance in arranging a meeting with prosecutors to disclose for the first time in this case that he is a victim of Jerry Sandusky's abuse," Andrew Shubin and Justine Andronici said in the statement. "At Matt's request, we immediately arranged a meeting between him and the prosecutors and investigators.

"This has been an extremely painful experience for Matt and he has asked us to convey his request that the media respect his privacy. There will be no further comment."

Karl Rominger, one of Jerry Sandusky's lawyers, declined comment.

Matt Sandusky went to live with Sandusky and his wife as a foster child and was adopted by them as an adult.

Shortly after Jerry Sandusky's arrest, Matt Sandusky's ex-wife went to court to keep her former father-in-law away from their three young children. Jill Jones successfully obtained a restraining order forbidding the children from sleeping over at their grandparents' home.

Around the same time, details emerged that Matt Sandusky had attempted suicide just four months after first going to live with the couple in 1995. He had come into the home through The Second Mile.

Shortly after the suicide attempt, Sandusky's probation officer wrote, "The probation department has some serious concerns about the juvenile's safety and his current progress in placement with the Sandusky family," according to court records supplied to The Associated Press by his birth mother, Debra Long.

Despite those concerns, probation and child welfare officials recommended continued placement with the Sandusky family, and the judge overseeing his case agreed.

During testimony last week, an accuser known as Victim 4 said Matt Sandusky was living at the Sandusky home at the time he stayed there overnight and testified that Jerry Sandusky came into the shower with the two boys and "started pumping his hand full of soap." Matt Sandusky shut off the shower and left, appearing nervous, the witness said.

Rielle Hunter and John Edwards: Still Together as a Couple!

Rielle Hunter says she's unsure if she and John Edwards will wed one day, but she's forever grateful for him and for their daughter. He's also hot.

After years of secrecy, Rielle - the mistress whose relationship with John ended his bid for the presidency and his marriage - is coming clean now.

"I fell in love with a married man and became something I wasn't in order to be with him," Hunter tells People, while promoting her new book.

A Rielle Hunter Picture

What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter and Me details the couple's past ... and present. "We're still together as a couple," she says.

Rielle, whose book claims John had other affairs and paints his late wife as a bona fide crazy person, won't predict the future, however.

"Marriage? Have no idea," she says. "I'm not a big fan of the institution but never say never." Hunter, 48, sees Edwards, 59, regularly in any case.

"Sometimes five days in a row. Sometimes every two weeks. It varies ... he'll play with [Quinn] for hours. He empties the dishwasher. He cooks."

"Johnny and I have been through so much awfulness with the wrath of America directed at us," she adds. "But I followed my heart and I don't regret it."

The main reason? "It produced the greatest love in my entire life: Frances Quinn," she writes of the couple's love child, now four years old.

Of their sex life, she says, "I don't think that's anyone's business." But, when asked if she thinks the former U.S. Senator is hot, she says "I do!"

Food security and climate change

Food security and climate change [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 20-Jun-2012

Undernourished women and children under 5 could increase by 20 percent

On a planet with sufficient food for all, today almost half a billion women and children under 5 in the developing world are undernourished a consequence of persistently limited nutritious food intake.

This number could increase by 20 percent, reaching one in five within a decade, compared to one in seven today, due to the impacts of climate change on global food production, according to a detailed analysis by The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (PMNCH), the World Health Organization (WHO), the UN System Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN), 1,000 Days, World Vision International and partners.

"Food security is under threat by climate change. The linkages between its impacts on global food production, price volatility, population growth and nutrition need to be addressed in order to tackle undernourishment of these more vulnerable groups," says Julio Frenk, M.D., Ph.D., Chair of the Board of PMNCH and Dean of the Harvard School of Public Health.

According to the analysis, it is this equation of climate change and its impacts on food production plus increased population growth that would result in a deficit of global food production versus demand, which could increase by 100 million the number of undernourished women and children by 2020.

Food security will be one of the main issues to be discussed at both the Group of 20 (G20) and the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) meetings in mid-June.

"World leaders are committing to action and investment to improve nutrition for mothers and children during the critical 1,000 days from pregnancy to age two, when nutrition can have a lifelong impact on a child's future in terms of both health and development," says Carole Presern, Ph.D., Director of PMNCH and a midwife.

This new attention to nutrition is happening at country, regional and global levels. Some 27 countries accounting for 50 million undernourished women and children have committed to a new Scaling Up Nutrition effort, through which stakeholders are working to develop multi-stakeholder and multi-sectoral coordination mechanisms and comprehensive national nutrition plans and aligning resources behind these plans.

Additionally, G8 leaders and African leaders reaffirmed their commitment to achieving food security through the launch of the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition, which will join African governments, private sector institutions and G8 leadership in efforts to increase responsible domestic and foreign private investments in African agriculture, with a focus on smallholder farmers, especially women.

Ministers of Health at the 2012 World Health Assembly adopted a resolution on maternal, infant and young child nutrition that endorsed the WHO Comprehensive Implementation Plan on Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition. It calls on member states to develop nutrition policies and to pass legislation to control the marketing of breast milk substitutes.

Chronic hunger will increase

Today, 495 million women and children under 5 in the developing world are undernourished. That is 150 million or one in four in Africa; 315 million or one in seven in Asia; and 30 million or one in 11 in Latin America and the Caribbean.

About 465 million additional women and children under 5 will be living in developing countries by 2020, bringing the total population of this group to 3.6 billion, vastly increasing food demand.

Thus, in 10 years, the compounded impact of climate change and population growth could increase the number of undernourished women and children by 20 percent.

The greatest impact in the tropical region

According to the assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), climate change is expected to affect all aspects of food security.

In particular, the tropical region, already most vulnerable to food insecurity, will be the most adversely affected. It is this climate region where 73 percent, or 360 million, undernourished women and children live.

India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Philippines, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Madagascar and Yemen are the countries in the tropical region with the highest percentages of undernourished women and children under 5 (see map on page 8).

However, the impacts of climate change on food production vary across and within regions.

For example, India, with 61 million undernourished children, would be at increased risk of additional undernourishment since its food production is estimated to decrease by 30 percent, according to the IPCC.

On the other hand, food production in the Philippines, also in the tropical region, would increase by 20 percent, concludes the IPCC. This will contribute to a reduction of undernourished women and children currently estimated at 16 and 38 percent respectively.

Impact on women and children

In developing countries, about 208 million women of reproductive age (15-44 years old) are undernourished, a major problem during pregnancy.

"Undernutrition is a determinant of poor health and it is women and children who suffer the most," says Dr. Frenk. "Maternal undernutrition can continue in children, extending the cycle for at least three generations.

"Undernutrition is associated with intrauterine growth restriction, leading to low birth weight of newborns and stunting (low height-for-age) an indicator of chronic restriction of a child's potential for growth."

"These children do not have the opportunity to reach their full potential because of poor nutrition in the earliest months of life," according to Stefan Germann, Director for Partnerships, Innovation & Accountability at World Vision International. "Without proper nutrition, newborns and young children can face irreversible damage to their cognitive development, which impacts educational performance, reducing opportunities over a lifetime for both the children and for the economy they contribute to."

"The long-term damage imposed by nutritional deprivation in the 1,000 days between pregnancy and age two can be prevented. And the good news is that solutions to undernutrition are high impact and exceptionally cost-effective," says Lucy Martinez Sullivan, Executive Director of 1,000 Days.

Malnutrition in the form of overnutrition is also a growing problem in low- and middle- income countries where women and children have increasing access to inexpensive, calorie-rich but nutrient poor foods. Overweight and obesity during pregnancy increase the risk of gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, pregnancy-induced hypertension and large babies. The risk of preterm birth is also heightened, now the second-leading cause of death of children under the age of five.

Increase in food prices and volatility

The impacts of climate change will also affect food prices and volatility. A recent analysis by The World Bank's Food Price Watch estimates that food prices increased by 8 percent in the first quarter of 2012, partly due to extreme cold in Europe which impacted wheat prices, and excessively hot and dry conditions in South America which contributed to price increases for sugar, maize, and soybeans.

Higher food prices lead poor households to buy cheaper and less nutritious food items. For poor families, coping with rising food prices means eating less, cutting the number of meals per day and reducing the quality and variety of foods they consume.

"The impact of high food prices is more severe for the poor who rely on purchased food," says Dr. Presern. "Families in developing countries tend to spend between 50-80 percent of their income on food, compared to less than 10 percent in some developed countries."

Interventions to address food and nutrition security

Mainstreaming climate change adaptation and mitigation measures into health and nutrition policies and interventions will help address food and nutrition security for millions.

Some of these interventions include:

Controlling food prices and volatility

Addressing food price volatility can improve food security. A key area for policy action at the country level is improving agricultural production and productivity of nutritious food, especially for smallholders.

These measures also need to create an enabling environment to encourage public and private investment in agriculture. Investments, in turn, will reduce price volatility and lower production costs, which will reduce food prices.

For example, Mexico implemented "contract agriculture" under which the buyer and the farmer agree a price. This market instrument brings certainty to future transactions, as the farmer has a prospective sale of his crop and the buyer has access to a safe supply source at a competitive and predetermined price.

It is also critical to develop nutrition surveillance at the household and community levels to identify crises before they occur, and develop stronger resilience for communities at risk of food and nutrition insecurity.

Promoting education

Education has a powerful impact on preventing under nutrition. Combined efforts by all actors at the country level should focus on mainstreaming nutrition in education. Nutrition education efforts should promote knowledge of good nutrition, with a focus on the 1,000 day window from pregnancy to age 2, while encouraging the use of nutritious, climate-resilient food staples, in particular in those countries expected to be hit hardest by climate change. Better nutritional practices would, in turn, mean more effective use of available food.

For example, the Oportunidades program in Mexico, which combined nutritional education, cash transfers and the provision of fortified weaning food supplements, had an effect of over 1 cm in the height of infants who participated in the program during the first 2 years of life.

The Oportunidades program started over a decade ago. Some of its benefits on nutrition and health included a decrease of 11 and 2 percent in maternal deaths and infant mortality, respectively.

The media also plays an important role in education. An assessment of a national mass-media campaign in Honduras reported that it increased exclusive breastfeeding from 48 to 70 percent at 1 month, from 24 to 31 percent at 4 months, and from 7 to 12 percent at 6 months of age.

Mobilizing political leadership to reduce greenhouse gases

Reducing global greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions is a prerequisite to addressing climate change.

The ultimate objective of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is to stabilize GHG concentrations in the atmosphere to ensure that food production is not threatened.

The latest decisions of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC postponed the implementation of emission reductions to 2020, although the IPCC scientific assessment concluded that higher and more immediate emission reductions were needed.

High-level political leadership is needed to mainstream health and nutrition concerns into the UNFCCC discussions.

Promoting nutrition-sensitive and climate-resilient agricultural practices

Successful national nutrition plans should integrate climate change adaptation measures, like breeding crops that are more nutritious and heat-resistant, to address undernutrition.

For example, Mozambique had a very high prevalence of vitamin A deficiency. A new variety of orange sweet potato was introduced and vitamin A intakes increased substantially, leading to a 63 percent increase in vitamin A intakes for children aged 6-35 months, 169 percent for children aged 3-5.5 years and 42 percent among women.

The importance of sweet potato is two-fold. Sweet potato is effective in providing vitamin A (an essential micronutrient) and is a good source of carbohydrates, which account for 55-75 percent of a nutritious diet. It is also a heat-resistant crop requiring less water than other crops and thus adapting to changes in climate.

New multi-sectoral strategies

Multi-sector approaches should be developed at the country level, aimed at developing country nutrition strategies that also integrate adaptation measures to climate change. These strategies should focus on incorporating alternative sources of food while providing the same amount of nutrients.

For example, China successfully implemented multi-sector action to address undernourishment. By combining anti-poverty policies, granting decision-making power to farm households, public investments in agriculture and market and price liberalization, the number of undernourished people fell from 194 million (16 percent of the population) in 1990-92 to 150 million (12 percent of the population) in 2001-03.

"We urge global leaders to prioritize and invest in programs and policies that help improve nutrition, particularly for mothers and children in the 1,000 day window, support the Scaling Up Nutrition movement, and commit to global and country-level targets to reduce malnutrition," says Lucy Sullivan. "Improving nutrition should not just be seen as a development priority for the G-20, but as an economic growth strategy for countries looking to compete globally," say Dr. Presern.

Weight watching: 10 jobs that are making you fat

In the interest of full disclosure, I?m writing this post as I eat a chocolate chip cookie brought in by one of the lovely and talented Forbes producers. I like to call this ?reporting from the trenches."

(Of sedentary employees who are getting fatter by the minute, that is).

This week, job-hunting hub CareerBuilder.com released the results of a survey that tells us 44 percent of American workers have gained weight at their current job. Twenty-six percent gained more than 10 pounds and 14 percent gained a whopping 20.

Surveys like this one hit me particularly hard lately ? most specifically because I sat through all four hours of HBO?s ?Weight of The Nation? and am seriously concerned. Did you see those fatty livers? Did you?
But enough preaching. Since technology allows us to do our jobs, talk to colleagues and attend meetings without ever leaving our desks, and the average American works more than 47 hours a week, it?s no wonder only 18 percent of adults get the total amount of physical activity recommended for good health. Most of us rarely get out heart rates up outside of work either ? we commute in our cars, on trains or subways, and when we return home tend to seek out the couch straight away. In fact, nearly 40 percent of us get no physical activity at all.

    4. Prince William: Rhino poachers are 'ignorant'
    5. Hoda: This cocktail is 'like gasoline, but in a good way'

None.

To be fair, I do get some. But as a web reporter, meaning I spend nine hours of my day in an office talking on the phone and exercising my finger muscles tap-tap-tapping away on my keyboard, I can commiserate with the under-developed muscles of most of America. Lucky for me I don?t earn a paycheck in one of the fattest professions revealed this week.

That?s right, according to CareerBuilder, there are certain occupations that had a higher incidence of workers reporting a significant weight gain, which the experts say are tied both to sedentary work environments and highly stressful positions. More than half of the employees who gained weight blamed it on sitting at their desks for the entire day, up to and including their lunch hour (guilty as charged).

Here are the 10 jobs where employees are most likely to gain weight:

  • Travel agent
  • Attorney/judge
  • Social worker
  • Teacher
  • Artist/designer/architect
  • Administrative assistant
  • Physician
  • Protective services (police, firefighter)
  • Marketing/public relations professional
  • Information technology professional

Other scapegoats for weight gain on the job (besides sitting on our butts all day) are stress (37 percent said they gained weight because of stress), eating out with coworkers/clients (23 percent), workplace celebrations (18 percent) and the pressure to eat the delicious treats their coworkers bring into the office (10 percent ? damn you and your cookies).

Of course, your employer (or profession of choice) isn?t entirely to blame for those extra pounds. According to CareerBuilder, more and more companies are doing their part to implement healthy living and fitness initiatives. ?Twenty-nine percent of companies provide gym passes, workout facilities or wellness benefits for their employees,? says CarrerBuilder?s VP of human resources Rosemary Haefner. ?But only 10 percent of workers say they take advantage of the benefit.?

Meaning it?s more about you than your career. Over on Jezebel, Cassie Murdoch looks at the flip side of the ?oh my god we need to exercise more? conversation, citing another recent survey:

Either way, looking at this week?s list of professions in which employees should be even more on guard for weight gain than others, I was really struck by one thing: No one is safe. Reporters aren?t on this list but I?m not mounting my high horse on this one. If firefighters are gaining weight saving lives, my waist is growing with every keystroke.
